Business Process Outsourcing

Business process outsourcing is a method adopted by companies to recruit external business partners, called the service provider, to carry out a job that can also be done in – house or within the company. It is not a new trend in the labour market, but the idea gained more attention with the introduction of internet and globalisation. The simple reason why many business processes are being outsourced is simply because they can concentrate more on major business activities.

We have so many big companies that are major players when it comes to business process outsourcing. For examples Microsoft had outsourced nearly all its software design and architecture to many Indian companies and also, many large manufacturing firms have outsourced their core distribution and logistics operations to capable companies that deliver the expected returns on investments.

The reasons why business process outsourcing is being embraced today by so many big and small companies rest on a common reason – which is to save the cost of labour. Because, in a time where the cost of setting up a business is skyrocketing, if the core business operations can be concentrated upon, while living the other necessary ones in the hand of a service provider in order to make the expected profit. It is a profitable venture that must be adopted by companies.

Business process outsourcing can also be beneficial to small and medium size businesses, if they are able to shelve that old business ethics of holding on to the belief that business process outsourcing will not fit into their business model. But the advantage in business process outsourcing as far as a small business is concerned is that, it provides a level playing field where core business activities are carried out with aim of gaining a competitive advantage over other competing businesses, all business activities that will not make major contribution to the bottom line are outsourced to experts at a reduced cost.

Business process outsourcing, can be beneficial to all established companies, but there must be a mutual agreement between the two before a contract is signed otherwise it could spell doom. A more reliable method of avoiding the pitfall is to ask for testing from the service provider, this will enable the concerned to quickly access the performances of the service provider based on an established company policy.

Business process outsourcing can be very beneficial for any business, small or large, but it is vital that proper research is done prior to commencing to outsourcing
